I agree with Joe on the supervision of your dog with the cat. We had a cat for 17 years- she helped raise 2 of my labs. Our cat was gradually introduced to them and there was alot of supervision and corrections (to the labs) if they did not "play nice"-- as our cat got older she would hiss and make a fuss, swipe them with her paw ( she had her claws) to let them know to leave her alone. Maybe while your dog is with the cat you could provide "something of greater value" ,treat or toy-- so that the dog would not just focus on the cat. Keep the time short in the beginning and gradually lengthen the "visits". Our cat did spend alot of time upstairs in the introduction days (on her own accord). As my labs grew up she became a big part of their lives.. It was interesting because they would chase other cats in the neighborhood -- yet, let her clean their ears, and groom them. Hang in there it can be done-- it will take awhile, it also depends on the cat-- they all have their own attitudes.
