Now that we have both of our Shepherds, I am interested in finding a good resource to begin agility and schutzhund training. After we complete basic obedience classes of course. Does anyone have any Dayton area affiliations or know of any groups? I would appreciate the info. Thanks! Angie

There is a brand new schutzhund club that is forming right now in this area. (Miami Valley Schutzhund Club.) I have trained with them a couple times. If you would like to know more about it, contact Daryle Mosby at dlmosby20@yahoo.com. Or you can ask me if you have any questions. It would be a good opportunity for you and your GSDs.

I actually communicated with this gentleman via email earlier this month. I would love to get involved. I definitely want to go to observe a few sessions so that I know what is involved. What is the typical age that a GSD begins with Scutzhund?

I'm sure he wouldn't mind if you came to observe a couple sessions to get the idea of what schutzhund is all about. The optimal age for any dog to begin schutzhund would be when it is very young, probably 10 weeks old. There are a lot of steps in competitive dog sport that need to be taken while raising the dog such as drive building, attentive heeling, tracking, and many more. However, I have seen dogs started later on in their lives and have done pretty well. You don't necessarily have to be competitive. Whether you take it seriously or not, it can be a very fun and rewarding activity for you and your dog!

Wow, 10 weeks. Is this requiring that the pup have completed basic obedience classes? That would seem too young to have completed the classes. At this point my 4 month old male is good with come, sit and down. Stay, we are still working on and I have not even begun heel. The female is just now 8 weeks and we are working on come and sit. Where and when is the next meeting? I will come by to see what is involved. Thanks!

I meant training should begin right around that age. The minimum age requirements for schutzhund are as follows: SCH BH- 12 months, SCH1-18 months, SCH2-19 months, SCH3- 20 months. They usually meet Saturday mornings....I'm not going this Saturday so you may have to check with Daryle for a time and place.

Ok, now I am not so worried. I felt like I had totally missed the boat there for a minute. :-) I guess I will email him back to find out the specific location and time. Thanks again for all your help. Maybe I will see you there one Saturday. Take care, Angie
