The way that I teach Place from a distance is to stand a couple of feet away from the placeboard. Point to the placeboard and tell your dog to place. As soon as one paw touches the placeboard you release and praise. Repeat this several times until your dog is consistently touching the placeboard with one paw. Then start to create some distance between you and the placeboard. Every once in a while when you tell your dog to place make sure all four paws go on the placeboard and make the dog hold for a few seconds before you release.
Once you have some distance between you and the placeboard and you tell your dog to place, if your dog acts confused don't hesitate to take a couple of steps toward the placeboard and repeat the command until your dog repsonds. As soon as the dog is on the placeboard, release and praise. | |
